Erica and Joseph

What an incredible day! St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Pittsburgh Zoo. My wife and I got married at St. Paul’s and just being there brought back so many wonderful memories. Erica and Joe were such a fun couple to work with. When we got to the zoo and went up the escalator, I got a very weird feeling and almost fell down the escalator. If you have been to the Pittsburgh Zoo then you know the feeling I had. It passed but then 30 minutes later when we were shooting in the aquarium I got the same feeling but worse. I blacked out for a second and fell over in mid shoot. I hit pretty hard but bounced right back up and finished the  awesome day. As a photographer, the first thing that comes to mind is not am I ok but is my camera ok. HAHAHA, all you photographers out there know you think the same thing. Thank god my camera was not damaged after the bad fall it took with me. My camera sucked it up and helped me capture the rest of an amazing day. So watch out next time your at the zoo. That escalator will get ya!

Here are some of my favorites from today.

Heather and Nick

What a fun couple. We had so much fun at this shoot. I can not wait for their wedding next year in October.

John and Jen Engagement Session

What a fun time we had this morning. Perfect weather, not to cold, sunny and a very beautiful place to take pictures of a perfect couple. I can not wait to shoot their wedding this spring. They kick off my busy season for 2009.

Enjoy!!!

A Walk In The Park

My wife and I took little Lucy for a nice walk in South Park. Isn’t she cute…

Kathleen and Justin

This past Saturday we did a wedding at Southpointe Gold Club in Washington, PA. I have not been there since my wedding 2 years ago and I have to say it was just as nice this past Saturday as it was on my wedding day.

Kathy and Justin had the perfect day with blue skies, nice and cool weather and lots of fun. We also worked with Gordon Schu  http://gordonschu.com/  who is absolutely one of the best videographers we have ever worked with. They did not sit down one bit. They were nice, fun and all over the place capturing the day right with us. I cant wait to work with them again.

Here are a few from Saturdays wedding.

Planning For Photography On Your Wedding Day

I was in a discussion with some of my photographer friends and a topic came up that is a huge concern for a lot of us. The topic was about planning or photography on your wedding day. Brides need to leave enough time to take the photos they want and for the amount of people that will be participating in them. 20 minutes is not enough time and in fact, an our is sometimes pushing it if you have a lot to get done and a lot of people in them.

You are paying over $30,000 for a venue and another few thousand for us to capture your day, so work with your photographer to make sure we can capture your day and all of the special moments. We dont need hours of time but talk with us about your plans and needs and we will see how long we think it will take. Trust our advice as this is something we do every weekend and have seen almost every situation that could arise.

You book us for a reason, our style, our expertise and our quality. You loved our portfolio for a reason. To get the images in our portfolio took 50% our skill and knowledge and 50% of the participation and time from the client.

With that said, we look forward to helping you plan your day for photography and please, if you have any questions make sure you contact us so we can help.

2009 Wedding Season

Hey everyone. I just wanted to remind you that we are only booking 26 weddings for 2009. In the past we have done 38 or so and that has really kept us busy. As much as I love my job and love working with all of you amazing brides and your families, I need a few weekends to spend with my family. I also want to make sure I have MORE time to dedicate to my clients and continue to provide them outstanding service and products.

Photos by Nick is a family owned, family run business and if you already do not know; my wife works with me as my assistant. Family is a HUGE part of our lives and I am getting to the age where we will be having children. I do not want to miss my family grow up, so I know all of my clients won’t mind the dedicated service that will be continued in 2009.

For my past clients, what does this mean for you? I have expanded my business to more than weddings. With the little ones in my life now (nieces, nephews) I have opened a children/infant side to our business. Check back in 2009 for our new website featuring our child models. If you are a past wedding client of ours and would like us to capture your children’s photos, you will receive special VIP pricing.

Thanks everyone!

Megan and Matt

Well all I can say is this wedding is one from Platinum Weddings!!! From every little detail, to a perfect day and a perfect couple; we had so much fun at this one. Bella Sera has to be one of our most favorite places to do a wedding after this amazing party!

Megan and Matt, we wish you the best with your marriage and hope that all of your dreams and wishes become a reality! Enjoy your honeymoon and we look forward to sharing the rest of your day with you when you get back.

Normally I only post 5-7 images from the day but I could not resist. I had to tell the complete story in this post.

How far out should you book your vendors?

Most people that get engaged and married are only getting married once and have no clue how long it actually takes to plan a wedding. If you want to get everything you want for your wedding such as the perfect venue, photographer, church, cake, dress ect…. you need at least 10 months to plan if not more. On average you will need 1 year - 18 months in advance to get what you want. I have to tell you that I am friends with a lot of other vendors in the Pittsburgh area and a lot of us are booked 10 months - 18 months in advance.

So what do we recommend are your 2 most important things to get booked within 2-3 weeks after you get engaged?

1. Wedding Reception Venue - this is where the memories and fun will happen. Find a location that is close to a hotel for any out of town guests or has easy access to transportation to a hotel. You don’t want anyone getting a DUI driving home from your fun event.

2. Photographer - second most important vendor to get booked. The photographer is the one and only person who will be there to do one thing and one thing only. Capture your day as it happens and tell the story of memories that will last a lifetime from generation to generation.

After you get those two vendors booked, everything else will fall in to place. You will find your dress, invitations, flowers, cake ect…

Facebook

So the past 2 months I have had many of my brides and other vendors ask me if I was on facebook. I have always though facebook was a high school/college thing. I began to look around and found a ton of well respected wedding vendors on facebook. I began to think that this could be a new and fun way to keep in contact and network with other vendors.

What does this mean for my brides who have asked about facebook? Well what we can do is post your favorites not only on our blog but on facebook so you can share them with your facebook friends.

So today I joined facebook and will use it strictly for business. If you ask to be my friend and your not a client or a wedding vendor I will have to reject your request. Sorry, not trying to be a jerk but I have to keep business separate.

New Camera

So a few weeks ago we got a new camera. Nikon D700. You can see some pics from Lindsey’s senior session, but today we are shooting our first wedding with it. I am super excited to use a Full Frame camera at a wedding. I will post some pics tonight when we get home. It is going to be a hot one today at 91 degrees. But at least it is a beautiful day out.

Check back tomorrow for some pics from today.
