Lindsey Schultz Senior Photos

Today we did a shoot with Lindsey Schultz, class of 09 at Peters Township High School. Check out some of the fun we had while photographing Lindsey on such a beautiful day. We used our brand new Nikon D700 camera that we just got this past week. WOW what an amazing camera! It also helped that we had an awesome model to take pictures of!

UPDATE !!! Current August Promotion ended

This promotion has ended. Check back for a future promotion if we should have one.

We only have 1 slot left for this promotion. SO hurry before it is gone!

Hey everyone. As promised, I will post any current promotions we have going on right now.

I have a new promotion starting today and is only good for the next 4 brides. I got a deal on some supplies for the business, so why keep all the savings with me? I am passing along the savings to my brides. So the next 4 brides to book my $5500 package will get it for $4100. A $1400 savings. I can only offer it to 4 brides, so if you want to take advantage of this special offer, contact me asap.

Thanks

Trash The Dress Pittsburgh

Hey Pittsburgh Brides… I am sure most of you heard about trash the dress. If you haven’t, then google it. What you will find is what some brides do after their wedding to just have some fun in a dress you will probably never do anything with again.

So what am I getting at here? Well we are taking applications for brides who want to trash their dress or just go take photos in their dress that we normally wouldn’t do on the wedding day, in risk of getting it dirty. If you feel up to the challenge and want to get some fun and crazy pictures in a Trash The Dress Session, contact us now to reserve your spot.

We would like to hold 3 sessions at the end of summer/fall and then 3 sessions in the winter. We are thinking of doing something like a ski trip or sled riding some saturday or sunday this winter.

Any questions? Contact me nick@photosbynick.com

Interview From A Potential Client

So I was sitting here thinking today about my most recent meeting with a client. I was asked some pretty off the wall questions at the end of our meeting. Questions I have never been asked before except when I was on a job interview a few years back. Well, I liked the questions so much I just had to share.

Client: What do you think the advantages of working for yourself rather than a large studio are?

Me: The best part of being self-employed is I am the one calling the shots, making the decisions and deciding how to run the big show. I do not have to answer to anyone but my client. That gives me the freedom to try new things, explore the photography world and define my style instead of defining someone else’s style and vision. The more real I am the more real my clients will respond to my work.

Client: WHat is the biggest business risk you have ever taken?

Me: The biggest risk I have ever taken was when I first started out and spent $15,000 on my credit cards for camera gear and not knowing if I would even make it to pay the credit cards back. Even thought it was the biggest risk I ever made, it was the smartest risk I made because that $15,000 I spent made me a lot more to buy better gear and expand our business even more. More importantly, it has enabled me to spend the extra money I have made on better quality products for my clients. I am about giving back to the client, so taking a few extra $$$ from my pocket to make a client a better album or give them a larger framed picture is well work it. I am a firm believer in taking risks, but if you work hard and believe in it with your heart then you will succeed.

Client: What was the turning point in your business?

Me: I cant answer that one just yet because I have had so many amazing experiences that all have been turning points in our business. We learn from every picture we take and I feel every wedding or event we shoot is a turning point for us. Ask me again in 30 years when I retire and I will have a better answer for you of an exact event or series of events.

Client: What is your deal breaker?

Me: I have to say that my deal breaker is that I will not compromise my artistic views and techniques for a client. People book me for my skills and vision. No, not everyone will like the way I shoot, but that is ok. I understand and will be more than happy to refer them to another photographer who will better suit their style.

Client: What is the most important element in your business?

The most important element in my business is my support from my family. My wife assists me for a lot of the weddings and she also helps me choose the perfect images for the albums we provide for our clients. I plan on building a family empire in the wedding photography world and hope one day my children can take over.

So at this point my client looked me in the eyes and said to her fiancee “honey, write this guy a check. I want him to do our wedding….”

This conversation with this client got me to really think these past few days. It made me realize how much I love to shoot weddings and how much fun it is to do this every weekend. I would not trade this for anything.

Heather and Rick

August hit us pretty fast as the wedding season got extremely busy. So did allergy season with my wonderful sinus infection I have right now. Today was a hot one, guaranteed! But sick or not, I was not going to let the heat get to me and neither did this fun couple. We had “So Much Fun” All day long shooting this one. Here are a few from today.

Time Machine for Mac Users - Photographer Tip

So tip #1 is for all the mac users reading my blog.

So, time machine, one of the coolest backup utilities I have ever used. It is easy to use, easy to setup and did I mention it was easy?!?!

So tonight I was editing and when I was done I did my normal backup then let time machine do it’s seperate backup. Then while it was backing up I was wondering how good this time machine is. So after I verified I had 3 backups of my work plus time machine (yes I know 3 backups is a bit much but I want my client work to be safe) I decided to give time machine a test of it’s own.

So what I did was deleted a client folder that I was completely done with, but also had 3 backups of just in case. I then restarted my computer, did some more work then deleted some more items.

I then figured, ok let’s see how time machine works with getting this back. So I enter into the time machine backups and there was the deleted files. Not only were they there but there were multiple versions that went back to the original files and to all of the edited versions. As I dug deeper I found things that were 2 months old and I was able to get them back. Not only could I get them back, but it only took an hour to recover a 50 gig folder.

So in conclusion from my experiment, I decided that time machine is the best and if my system ever crashed and I lose client files, I can get them back in no time. I am very glad to be a mac user. I highly recommend you get an external vdrive for your mac and let time machine do wonders for your mac. This isn’t just a feature for photographers, but a feature for any mac user. If this isn’t enough reason to become a mac, then I don’t know what is.

Photographer Tips

So I was thinking tonight as I was working on some weddings and playing with my Apple computers. Yes I know, thinking this hard this late leads to no sleep and bad health. But I’m a nite person, always have always will.

But what I was thinking was how cool it is that I am going to start posting tips for brides and helping them out with their wedding planning. But how much cooler would it be if I also gave some photography tips and some basic computer tips to help everyone out?

So if your my competition and your reading this, I know what your thinking. Woohoo your getting the inside scoop ok how we do things at my studio. Yeah not so much! These are going to be things we should know to do as professional photographer but most common people don’t know. But your more than welcome to call me and meet up and discuss photography with me if your my competition. I don’t mind helping other photographers out.

So what I decided to do is post a short tip anytime I thought of something that I feel will help you out. Especially since i can post from my iphone. Check back often for updates.

First Post From My iPhone

So as a lot of you know, the iPhone 2.0 software came out a few weeks ago along side the 3g iPhone. Of course me being the techie I am, I got the new phone and a ton of cool software.

With the new software, a lot of developers are creating some really cool software like this new wordpress software. I can post right from my phone and provide llive updates anywhere in the world.

So with that said, I want to make this first post informational for the brides and explain what is to come in the upcoming months. We will be adding a section for brides to go to get tips while planning their wedding, find current promotions, and find other wedding vendors for your special day.

Our current promotion for the remainder of July is a free engagement session or extra hour of photography on your wedding day with the booking of your wedding package. Book now for your 2009 wedding as this promotion ends August 1, 2008.

Thanks
Nick
